Desired language proficiency: Zeliang/ Kuki or Nagamese in addition to English/ Hindi

The Wildlife Conservation Society-India works to conserve wildlife backed by science. We work in partnership with governmental and non-governmental organizations to deal with conservation challenges such as human-wildlife interaction, countering wildlife trafficking, conservation of marine ecosystems and species, conservation of endangered species, livelihood development of local communities, and so on. Roles and Responsibilities:

Main responsibilities: 

  • Play the role of Field Assistant (Community Representative) on behalf of WCS-India's project in the beneficiary villages 
  • At all times, the FA will seek prior approval from local village authorities of WCS-India programmes and engagements with the community in the respective village jurisdiction.
  • He/She will coordinate closely with Project Staff and provide necessary and important feedback that bears implications on the programmes, trainings and meetings which WCS-India will engage with the community.
  • Should speak fluently in Zeliang /Kuki or Nagamese in addition to English/ Hindi, etc., to communicate with the community in the landscape. 
  • The FA will maintain a monthly report of all activities /engagements which have been carried out with input from the Youth Volunteers. 
  • Monitor the listed project activities initiated with the beneficiaries in the conservation of biodiversity and wildlife, and contribute to the monthly report. 
  • Assist in the baseline survey at the entry of the project in the 6-beneficiary village on the awareness of hunting, and assist in developing and strengthening village-imposed hunting regulations in community forests. 
  • Assist in mapping human-wildlife conflict and existing/potential mitigation measures in 3 villages that have reported such incidents. 
  • Assist in training local youth in camera trapping and monitoring.
  • Training local youth in GIS mapping techniques to study land usage patterns of their villages. 
  • Conduct environment awareness education with the WCS-India team in the project landscape 

Participation in engagement with stakeholders and the community 

  • Work with WCS-India Staff to assist them in collecting more robust data using social science methods for understanding social parameters related to conservation, as well as traditional ecological knowledge.                     
  • Co-create a process to document and incorporate community knowledge into the design and implementation of conservation strategies. 
  • Build relations with territorial leaders, local authorities and government social agencies
