Marine Resources

Dive Brochure

WCS-India's Marine Programme conducts research with the aim of using our findings to design outreach and awareness strategies that strengthen the capacity of our partner stakeholders. Towards this goal, we launched a brochure entitled “A Guide to Responsibly Explore the Reefs of Goa”, which visually communicates responsible behaviours for recreational SCUBA divers in Goa. It is based on a research study that assessed SCUBA diver-substrate interactions on the coral reef habitats of Grande and Saint George Islands, Goa. The visual aid replicates the reef habitat of Goa and its benthic features that divers may encounter underwater.

The brochure acts as supplementary material for dive shops in Goa to assist their efforts in ensuring safety for both divers and corals. Dive professionals have started using the brochure to visually draw their students'/tourists' attention to responsible body postures, buoyancy, and position of hands and legs that avoid any physical contact with corals and other reef-associated substrate and fauna that could potentially damage or hurt them.

The Pod:
Newsletter of the Marine Mammal Consortium of India

The Marine Mammal Consortium of India (MMCOI) is a platform for data sharing across groups working on marine mammal and marine science topics ranging from behaviour and population dynamics to human dimensions, including economics, policy, and conservation.  The Pod is an annual newsletter that includes stories, articles, scientific studies, and engaging activities to bridge the knowledge gaps in cetacean conservation in India. Dive in to learn more about these fascinating and elusive megafauna species that inhabit our waters and to keep up with marine research in India!

Posters

Discover the scientifically informed outreach posters our Marine Programme uses to enhance public awareness of critical marine conservation issues. These posters are grounded in research and provide detailed, research-based information on various aspects of marine ecosystems, species, and their conservation. Designed to inform and educate, they serve as valuable resources for fostering a deeper understanding of marine environments to a broad audience.

Cetacean Guides

For World Whale and Dolphin Day in 2023, we released a series of identification guides for a few of the common cetacean species found along India's coasts. These guides include helpful ways to identify whales and dolphins based on their physical characteristics as well as certain commonly seen behaviours such as blowing and fluking. They also describe the animal's size, diet, and include interesting facts about these majestic megafauna.
